Different Methods for Design of Steel Structure in Canada

Steel Structures Design in Canada is the science of creating the basic framework of any structure like buildings, skyscrapers, bridges, etc. This framework has to be strong enough so it can withstand all kinds of external forces like storms and earthquakes. Simple Design

Simple design is still commonly used and is the most traditional approach. It is assumed that no moment is transferred from one connected member to other members except for the nominal moments that arise as a result of eccentricity at joints. The connection between the members should have different characteristics depending on whether the design method for the frame is plastic or elastic. Frames can resist lateral loads in this design without depending on the additional bracing system for stability. The main advantages of this method are:

  • Connections work better in load reversal situations or earthquakes
  • Beams can be less deep compared to beams in simple design

Semi-Continuous Design

Semi-continuous design is more complex than simple or continuous design as the real joint response is represented more realistically. Analytical routines to study the behavior of close connections requires sophisticated computer software. However, two simplified procedures exist for both braced and unbraced frames.

  • The wind moment method for unbraced frames
  • The semi-continuous design method for braced frames

Plastic Design

This method is relatively newer compared to other designs, but this design is quite difficult to implement. One major drawback of this design is its structural usefulness of the material is limited up to the ultimate load. So, it is important to determine the strength of the joint and the ultimate load capacity. When it comes to calculating sway deflections, sway stability and beam deflection, the stiffness of the joints is crucial. However, the plastic design is more economical than simple and continuous design.
